FACT FUTURES: Visyon Congleton 1

Hosted by Visyon Congleton

This year we have teamed up with FACT in Liverpool to create and deliver digital workshops across rural areas of Cheshire East.  FACT is a cinema, art gallery and the UK’s leading organisation for the support & exhibition of film, art and new media and they do world-leading digital outreach to young people.  This programme is free thanks to funding from  EU LeaderArts Council England and Cheshire East Council.

The FACT FUTURES project will explore the future of working life in rural areas by making prototype Internet of Things (IoT) air quality sensing devices and using these to explore and question the world around us.  IoT is a great way to connect rural areas and share data across the region.

The programme takes place over 3 sessions. The students will act as designers, coders, citizen scientists, digital artists and makers through the series of workshops.  In the first session the students think about air quality and what it means – and deploy some low-fi air quality detectors, which are simply little pieces of plastic covered in Vaseline.

They then make their own air quality sensor from a kit.

In the second and third sessions, the students separate off into different groups and cover aspects of the production of an air quality sensor including: design and prototyping, 3D drawing and modelling, internal layout of the sensor, scientific context and using thingful to research air quality data around the world as well as how to engage wider audiences with the project and to communicate the project.

This workshop is fully subscribed for Visyon students.

FACT Futures is a collaboration between SHIFT and FACT, running from November 2017 – November 2018. It is part of a wider-region project to upskill and network the creative digital economy in Cheshire East and offers a chance for ongoing growth and collaboration in this area.
